PCIP Employer Information
Purpose of Pomona College Internship Program
Developed in 1976, PCIP: provides students with a stipend to pursue part-time or low-paid unpaid experiential learning opportunities during the semester or summer break.
These internship opportunities should support students with:
- Experiencing a professional work environment
- Enhancing knowledge and awareness for a particular career field
- Opportunity to network with industry professionals
- Applying their liberal arts education skills
- Guiding their process on future career pathways
It is a highly selective program that allows students to apply for funding consideration after they have received a written internship offer from an employer. Pomona does not guarantee funding to a student, nor does it provide internship placement to an organization.
Criteria for Experiential Learning Internship Opportunity
Employers must abide by the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) regarding unpaid internships and upholds the criteria as stated by the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE).
- Provide “real-world” experience beyond the classroom
- Include high level of supervision, training and mentoring
- Mutual benefits for both student and employer
Must have new internship experience each application period (e.g. new role OR increased responsibility)
Internship opportunities being considered for PCIP must be one of our “PCIP-eligible” internships on Handshake or an opportunity with a company in an eligible industry.
Eligible industries: Education (K-12 and Higher Education), Government (Local, State, and Federal), Healthcare (non-pharmaceuticals), Journalism, Law, Library Services, NGO, Non-Profit Organization, Performing and Fine Arts, Politics, Religious Work, and Research (non-7C affiliated).
Eligibility Clarification: A company’s industry is a classification that groups organizations with similar activities together and within that company they may have a variety of job roles.
Example:
- Not eligible – A finance intern role for a private, for-profit company in the finance industry.
- Eligible – A finance intern role for a non-profit organization.
We disclaim any obligation to provide services to employers in violation of policies and procedures.
The College is committed to a policy of equal employment opportunities for all applicants and employees and complies with all applicable state and federal laws on the matter.
Course Credit
Pomona college does not award graduation credit for stand-alone (non-course-based) internships. Students may submit a request for transcript notation, this notation is a one-half-course credit will be noted on the students’ transcript but will not count towards the total units needed for graduation.
Signature Request for Legal Documents
Pomona College does not enter into agreements with organizations regarding internships. Nor does the College sign legal or employer documents as part of any course credit requirements. Any legal documents signed by students are done so independently and at their own risk. In addition, the College assumes no responsibility for the legal validity or consequences of any such documents.
Travel Advisory Restrictions
Students looking to apply for PCIP must be aware of the country and/or region’s travel advisory restrictions for in-person/hybrid opportunities determined by the U.S. Department of State.
Organizations and/or companies located in a Level 3 or Level 4 travel advisory region or country as determined by the U.S. Department of State will not be approved for any Pomona sponsored funding which includes PCIP.
Please keep this in mind as you look to recruit students as a fully remote opportunity may be a better option for students.
Internship Placement and Funding Expectations
Internships are student sourced and must be secured prior to submitting an application to be considered for PCIP funding. Funding is also not guaranteed for a student upon receiving an offer from an employer. While we do our best to promote opportunities, we do not guarantee that interns will be placed at your company or organization.
Due to the selective nature of the program and limited funds, students and employers should plan accordingly if this opportunity is not selected for PCIP.
Employers should recognize that students may face financial difficulties to pursue an unpaid opportunity. When a prospective intern communicates such a hardship, it’s essential to provide support to ensure their success. It is highly encouraged that in-person and/or hybrid opportunities move to fully remote if funding is not awarded.
To help vet employers recruiting on our campus whether it be (paid/unpaid) internships, full-time and part-time opportunities, we ask that organizations join Handshake to post these opportunities.
